PROLOGUE:
The First Wedding
He hesitated. Maybe just a second or two, but for those two seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
“I do.” He struggled to get it out through a dry hacking cough. It was as if those two little words had been lodged in his throat. Stuck. Hoping to be swallowed.
The priest’s joyful tone closing the ceremony blurred in my mind. I kept pretending, continuing to feed myself more lies. It was just cold feet. Freezing cold feet. Nothing a week honeymooning in Montego Bay wouldn’t warm up.
“You may now kiss the bride.”
His lips barely grazed mine before he backed away, using the sleeve of his tux to mop away the sweat streaming down his stricken face.
My fingers linked into his clammy hand tightly as we exited down the aisle between our applauding family and friends.
“We did it,” I whispered to him as we reached the vestibule of the church. “We’re married.”
He barely nodded before covering his mouth and running toward the arched door, making it just in time to vomit into the manicured shrubbery of St. Bernadette’s.
The Second Wedding
He smiled. The entire time. Ear to ear. His happiness was so obvious. Once again, I struggled to breathe.
“I do.” The words flew from his mouth. This time there was no hesitation.
I zeroed in on his lips, watching as he licked them in anticipation for the closing kiss that would seal the deal. The officiant pronounced them a couple, and their kiss was one filled with passion. After a few seconds, I had to look away.
He was no longer mine.
He found joy with another. I wanted to be happy. I really did.
But it broke my fucking heart.
